It lies about 630 kilometers southeast of Manila and 72 kilometers south of Cebu City.
The city’s name, Tagbilaran, is said to come from the phrase “Tagu Bilaan”—meaning “to hide from Bilaan”, a reference to early residents seeking refuge from marauders in ancient times.
